Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my data hosted?

All map data and metadata are securely hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) infrastructure via Firebase. Currently, the default region for storage and processing is Europe (europe-west) to ensure compliance with strict privacy standards.

What is the difference between Public vs. Private maps?

Public maps can be viewed by anyone who has the link (e.g., qgis2onlinemap.com/v/xxxxxxx). They are not indexed by search engines automatically, but the URL itself is not restricted.

Private maps are secured with a password you define during upload. When someone visits the link, or views an embed of the map, they must enter the correct password before any map data is loaded from the server to their browser. Passwords are securely hashed (SHA-256) and never stored in plain text.

Who can access uploaded data?

Only you (if logged in) have administrative access to delete or manage your uploaded map files. The raw map files can only be rendered through our viewer if the correct password is provided (for private maps) or if the specific generated link is accessed (for public maps). Our team does not actively monitor or access your private map data unless required for technical support with your explicit permission.

Early MVP Disclaimer ⚠️

Qgis2OnlineMap is currently in an Early MVP (Minimum Viable Product) phase. While we strive for high availability, there are no long-term guarantees yet regarding data permanence. Data may be periodically cleaned up, and you should always keep a local backup of your QGIS exports. Use this tool for sharing and presentation rather than long-term cold storage.
